The Colosseum is located about 1 km south-east of the historic center of Rome and less than 2 km from Termini station where lines A and B of the Rome underground cross.
Getting to the Colosseum is therefore very simple, just take the metro line B and get off at the 'Colosseo' stop. You will find yourself right at the foot of the monument!
From Fiumicino Airport
Once landed you can take the Trenitalia train which leaves every 15 minutes to arrive at the Tiburtina station in about 40 minutes and then take the underground line B and get off, in fact, at the Colosseum stop.
From Ciampino Airport

From Ciampino Airport, on the other hand, there is a bus (the 520) which takes you to the nearby Subauguta and Cinecittà stations of line A of the metro and one (720) which leads to the more distant Laurentina station of line B.
The historic center is the part of the city that extends from the Campidoglio to Piazza del Popolo in the north and, from east to west, between the Lungotevere and the Quirinale Hill, including the most iconic places in Rome such as the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna or the Pantheon. The Colosseum is located about 1 km southwest of Piazza Venezia (at the foot of the Campidoglio) from which the road (Via del Corso) starts that crosses the entire historic center to Piazza del Popolo.
From the Trevi Fountain, Piazza di Spagna or the Pantheon you just need to walk a few meters to Via del Corso and from there take a bus from the nearest stop or reach the Colosseum directly on foot, continuing along Via dei Fori Imperiali, after Piazza Venezia.
From Piazza Navona, instead, it is better to go and take the bus to the Colosseum from Corso Vittorio Emanuele.
Finally, from Villa Borghese or Piazza del Popolo, the fastest way is to take the subway line A at the nearby Flaminio station to Termini station and from there take the line B (direction Laurentina) and get off at Colosseum.
The Sistine Chapel is located inside the Vatican Museums, in Vatican territory, about 5 km west of the Colosseum.
To reach the Colosseum from the Vatican, therefore, you need to use public transport and the fastest way is to take the metro line A to Termini Station where you should change and take the metro B to the Colosseum.
From St. Peter's Basilica the closest stop is Ottaviano while, if you are at the Vatican Museums, the closest stop is Cipro.
Alternatively, from St. Peter's Basilica you can also reach Castel Sant'Angelo where, crossing the bridge you reach Corso Vittorio Emanuele where there are various buses that arrive at Piazza Venezia, Termini station or directly to the Colosseum
The main means by which to reach Rome and the Colosseum from the airport are the Leonardo Express high-speed train and the Shuttle Bus Transfer.
The Leonardo Express train leaves every 15 minutes from the airport and arrives at Termini Station after about half an hour, without intermediate stops.
The Shuttle Bus instead connects the airport with the historic center of Rome where it makes three stops, including Termini Station. The bus departs every day from Terminal T3 (Stall 12) of the airport according to these timetables .
From Termini station you can easily reach the Colosseum with just two metro stops

Rome is connected to the rest of the world by two airports and two main train stations.
The Airports
Rome's main airport is the Leonardo Da Vinci Airport in Fiumicino, considered one of the best airports in the world
(and the best in Europe in 2024). Located about 40 km south-east of Rome, it is connected to the city by buses, shuttles and trains to the two
train stations, Termini and Tiburtina.
The second, smaller one is Ciampino Airport, a few km from Rome and is easily reached by the subway line A, as well as by buses and
shuttles connected to the stations.
Railway Stations
The two main train stations in Rome are Termini Station, which is also the largest station in Italy and the fifth in Europe, and
the more modern Tiburtina Station.
Located near the historic center, Termini station allows you to quickly reach (with a few subway stops or even on foot)
the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain and other tourist sites in Rome.
Tiburtina station is a little further from the historic center but is still connected to the Colosseum by a few stops on the B subway line.
Furthermore, it is an important hub for buses from various cities in Italy.
