The Trevi Fountain

The most famous fountain in the world. The scenography is dominated by a rocky cliff that occupies the entire lower part of the palace, in the center of which we find a large niche delimited by columns where a large statue of Ocean stands, the god proceeds on a shell-shaped chariot pulled by two horses winged, one agitated and the other placid, in reference to the similar moments of the sea, sometimes calm and sometimes stormy.
On the sides there are two other smaller niches occupied by the statues of Healthiness (to the left of Oceanus) and Abundance (to the right of Oceanus), the latter depicted holding the symbolic horn full of fruits and coins.

FOUNTAIN OF THE RIVERS

Piazza Navona

Designed and built by Gian Lorenzo Bernini between July 1648 and June 1651 on commission from Pope Innocent According to legend, the rivalry between Bernini and Borromini had repercussions in the construction of the fountain. In fact, it is said that the giant who symbolizes the Nile hides his eyes so as not to see the church of Sant"Agnese in Agone in front of him and built by Borromini, and that the statue of the Rio della Plata keeps his arm raised in fear of a possible collapse of the bell tower of the same church. But this could not be the case because the church in question was built by Borromini only starting from 1652, a year after the inauguration of the fountain

TURTLE FOUNTAIN

Piazza Mattei

One of the most beautiful fountains in Rome, it was built between 1581 and 1588 by Giacomo Della Porta, a few steps from the ancient Jewish ghetto.
According to legend, Duke Mattei, a lover of gambling, one day lost his entire family fortune and, thus, his future father-in-law refused to give him his daughter in marriage. In response, the duke had this magnificent fountain built in a single night and the following day he invited the betrothed and her father to the palace to show them the work, and exclaimed: "This is what a man is capable of creating in a few hours." penniless Mattei!”

TRITON FOUNTAIN

Piazza Barberini

Created between 1642 and 1643, it is one of Gian Lorenzo Bernini"s masterpieces.
Commissioned by Pope Urban VIII Barberini, above all, to embellish the square onto which his palace overlooked, the fountain represents the marine God who rises imposingly from an open bivalve shell and supported by the intertwined tails of four open-mouthed dolphins.

BARCACCIA FOUNTAIN

Piazza di Spagna

It was built by Pietro Bernini (father of the more famous Gian Lorenzo), in 1629, commissioned by Pope Urban VIII. Its particular shape may have been inspired by the presence of a dry boat in the square, brought there by the flood of the Tiber in 1598.

ACQUA PAOLA FOUNTAIN

Via Garibaldi

It was commissioned in the early 1600s by the newly elected Pope Paul V Borghese (from whom it takes its name) to supply the areas of the Borgo and Trastevere districts, which were poorly supplied with water at the time. It took on its current appearance with the renovation carried out at the end of the 17th century by Carlo Fontana.
The Romans of Trastevere coined the saying "You are worth as much as Paola water" to indicate something of little value because the Paola water itself, which came from Lake Bracciano, was considered of poor quality.

FOUNTAIN OF THE NAIADS

Piazza della Repubblica

The fountain was initially inaugurated in 1901 but the provocativeness of the sculpted female figures aroused numerous controversies and the work remained hidden for a long time by a wooden fence. The central sculptural part initially included three tritons, a dolphin and an octopus, and was ironically renamed "fritto misto" by the Romans.
Moved to Piazza Vittorio in 1913, the sculpture was then replaced with the current Glaucus, a powerful man entwined with the dolphin, from whose mouth the central jet of water releases very high. The fountain was finally inaugurated in 1914.
